Master Bathroom

Before - The Doors
Master Bathroom Doors Before

The door to the left (with the blue towel) is to the Master Bedroom. In the middle is the window we removed. The step-in shower is to the right of the window. The tub (with a picture window over it) is on the right.

After - The Doors
(insert after picture)

The doorway leading to the Master Bedroom was widened to 36 inches. The door hangs so that it now opens to the left. The window was turned into an exterior exit from the bedroom end of the house (in case of fire). It opens onto the patio. The step-in shower was remodeled extensively (see the separate pictures).

Before - The Sinks

This view is to the left of the previous pictures. On the right is the door into the Master Bedroom. Next to it is the door into the closet. Above the sinks, in the mirror, you can see the open door for the throne room.

After - The Sinks
(insert picture)

The Master Bedroom door was widened and it now opens to the left. Access to the closet was moved to the bedroom because there wasn't wall space in the bathroom to widened it sufficiently. The doorway to the closet in the bathroom was closed off. The cabinet under one sink was removed to create leg room to roll under the sink.

Before - Shower, Tub and Throne Room
Master Bathroom Shower and Tub Before

To the left is the step-in shower. Note that it has a water dam that must be steped over. The glass door opens out to the left. The unit is set in several inches from the edge of the wall to the right. (Not shown, the shower head and knobs are on the same wall as the tub.) At the other end of the tub, to the right, is the throne room.

After - Shower

The shower unit was removed. The area was tiled to make the floor roll-in-able.

A fold down built-in bench was installed on the wall to the right. (Husband uses the shower too.)

The plumbing was moved to the exterior wall on the left so that a wheelchair user could side transfer onto the shower bench.

Corner shelf to hide pipes.

Water temperature regulator. Hand held for rinsing back and washing dog.

Needs more grab bars.

Roll in to run water ahead. Didn't install near opening - easy to reach from bench.

Not slope floor correctly. If building from scratch or remodeling a non-slab home, would put a rectangular drain across the entire opening.

The former tub area is slowly being converted into a roll-in shower area. So far, just the tub has been removed. We haven't figured out what to do with the current shower area yet.

The Throne Room

Before:  A very small room. The door opened in, reducing the available floor space.

After:  The throne room doorway was removed along with the wall. The wall between the throne and the tub was left in place. Grab bars were added on the walls on each side of the throne. Backer boards were not installed inside the walls. Instead, mounting boards were made to match the bathroom cabinets and were surface mounted. The mounting boards are attached to four studs. This arrangement allows front transferring only. (Should side transferring become necessary, the wall next to the tub could be removed.) The throne itself, was replaced with a raised height fixture.

Phone / intercomm

Wall length shortened two feet.
